Creating Fun Photo Projects With Your Children

Though the classic family portrait will always have a place as an annual tradition, did you know that there are tons of other ways to use photography to engage your family and have a great time together? It’s always fun to take something you enjoy and share it with the people you care about most, so here are a few fun photo projects that your family will love.

Photo Outing
While not the most complicated of activities, there is still great joy to be had in rounding up the family, heading to a scenic location like the beach or a local trail, and having everyone take pictures of the things they find the most interesting. This is really a low cost outing considering the only cost is a few disposable cameras, the cost for developing the film and a little bit for transportation. Plus, your family will have a lot of fun going on a photo taking adventure.

Creating a Photo Scrapbook
What better way to share the images that resulted from a photo outing than by creating a themed scrapbook together? Even if you didn’t go on the outing, you can make a photo scrapbook of holidays, vacations, special events, or anything you want. Let the kids design frames for each page with construction paper and markers, then everyone can decide on which images go where. When all is said and done, you’ll have great memories in the scrapbook, but also great memories about making it.

A Different Type of Scavenger Hunt
If you live in a safe neighborhood or you trust your children to be on their own for a little while, a great activity is a photo scavenger hunt. Give each family member a list of objects to find, then let them take a disposable camera out into the world to track those objects down. You can also set a time limit to keep things moving and to prevent it from going on longer than planned. Once everyone has finished, go by your local photo shop and see who was able to get the most photos of items on their list!

Photo Story
Creating a photo story is similar to scrapbook but is more like a book and requires more time. Essentially, you take a few photographs from a special time or an event, put them in chronological order, then work with your family to write captions similar to a children’s book that tell the story of the event. New pets, family vacations, or new babies are all excellent candidates for photo stories, and if you frame each picture with construction paper and use that for the captions you can hang them in your house for everyone to see.

Documentary

If you have more time to take on a photo project, then a family documentary is a fantastic activity to spend time doing with your family. First you have to decide on a person to be the subject and then the other family members interview them and follow them around for a day taking pictures to help “document” their life. You can include descriptions, interviews, and all sorts of other things you might see in a documentary about a person, except in this case everyone in your family is learning about each other instead of a movie star or musician. At the end of the project, you can all work together to create a fake biography or magazine article featuring the stories, interviews, and photographs.

There is really no limit to the fun and creativity you can have when you get your family involved in taking pictures. By doing any of these photo projects you’ll not only get to spend some quality time with the people you care about but you’ll also get to create a photo keepsake that your family can enjoy. With these fun types of activities, you’ll be amazed how your loved ones still have lots of surprises to offer!
