Tiffany lamps: Unique Colours And Shades
When we think of tiffany lamps the first think that strikes our mind is its vibrant colors, bejewelled, dragonfly design stained glass lampshades. Louis Comfort Tiffany was the man who created tiffany lamp. He was an American and son of a New York jeweller, Charles Tiffany. He took advantage of the electrical era with the vibrant artistic movement called Art Nouveau. He was in Europe at the time when the movement was reaching its full development and it profoundly affected his creative ideas and influenced his artwork.
He created the stained glass in a whole spectrum of peacock colours. These stained glasses were a perfect medium for softening and diffusing the barrenness of the light. With this new innovative design Louis Comfort Tiffany created an excellent masterpiece. His designs had different shades of colour and light mixed together in such a way that the end result was outstanding. These lamps made from glass and metal became very popular among people as they had a different glow and colours than normal glass lamps.
Along with colours he even experimented with blown glass technique to create new designs. His team consisted of skilled craftsmen and glassblowers to help him make unique lamps that were treasured by people. These lamps were very expensive and a luxury item and only the wealthy and rich people could afford them in America.
The term “Favrile” is used to define designs which had colours in the glass among the tiffany lamps. The word “Favrile” means by hand and this technique was patented by Tiffany in 1880. These designs were different from the stained glass technique which was used in Europe.
In Tiffany’s methods the reheated glass was sprayed with vaporized solution of salts of tin or iron. These vapours were absorbed by the molten glass and created layers of colours when the glass was cooled down. With these glass sheets having different colours Tiffany designed lamps in different styles and shapes.
Tiffany’s indigenous technique for producing coloured glasses was magical and quite effective. He designed different colours by using different metal vapours. The copper vapour spray resulted in greenish blue to a rich ruby red and the cobalt vapour produced a spectrum of blue shades and if mixed with manganese it gave the black colour. Glass colour variation was even done by changing the furnace conditions and temperatures.
Tiffany lamps had popular designs like dragonfly, peacocks, wisteria and water lilies. During that time having these lamps was only the reach of the rich and wealthy Americans. However today you can find many cost effective lamp shades which are reproduction pieces and have captured the style of that period.
