Maui Jim Sunglasses is a company that was first founded in 1980 on Maui Island. Originally there were a small company that only sold sunglasses from their store on the beach. The company decided that no sunglasses on the market at the time could protect against the terrible glare and UV rays that were common on the island. By 1986 they started to develop new technology to help with this problem.
Maui Jim Sunglasses, according to their website, use a technology know as PolarizedPlus2. This technology uses polarizing lenses to reduce glare. It also comes with protection against all three kinds of UV radiation.
UV rays come in three types, UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA was considered harmless until recently. Many sunblocks don’t protect against UVA because of this. Scientists have recently determined that UVA actually can cause cancer indirectly by causing chemical reactions inside the body. UVB is the most harmful kind of radiation for us. It is what causes tans, sunburns, and skin cancer. UVC is actually stronger than UVB, but it is blocked by the earth’s atmosphere.
There are several layers used to make a Maui Jim lens. The innermost layer is a polarized film. Around that there is a layer for optical correction, for those who want prescription sun glasses. Outside of that layer is a coating to protect the glasses from scratching.
Surrounding this layer is an anti reflective layer and a bi gradient mirror. These are both to block different kinds of glare. The outermost layer is a waterproof protection to help with removing water and cleaning.
After putting so much effort into their technology, you won’t be surprised to find out that these are not cheap sunglasses. Most of them seem to run between $270-$300. If you spend a lot of time outside and haven’t found sunglasses that you like, then it might be worth the price. They also come in many different styles, different frame sizes and shapes, lens shapes, lens colors, and pretty much and variation you can think of.
Other sunglasses come with UV protection as well. Really you should never buy a pair of sunglasses that doesn’t have UV protection, but most sunglasses have it. You can find polarized lenses as well, although it is a bit more difficult. The combination of UV protection and polarized lenses doesn’t really imitate what Maui Jim offers. If you ask Maui Jim enthusiasts though, nothing compares to the real thing.
